I prefer the shower to the bath.
Let’s start by preserving water, the resource of which is becoming scarce on the planet, by preferring short showers (70 liters of water for 5 minutes) to baths (150 liters). With the tap turned off, save 60 liters of water per day and per person (based on three daily brushings). In the same vein, you can also swap your liquid cosmetics for their stable version, which saves 90% water and a lot of plastic and packaging. So, I prefer bar soaps, but now also shampoos, deodorants, make-up removers, toothpaste. Other advantages of solid formats? More concentrated in active ingredients, they last longer and do not need preservatives.
Replace cotton with make-up remover squares
Cotton growing is one of the most water-intensive and uses a lot of pesticides. For make-up removal, it is advantageously replaced by reusable make-up remover squares, often woven in bamboo fiber, or by their “ancestor,” the washcloth, which is making a strong comeback in the bathroom. Everything is changed every day and machine washed.
Adopt eco-refills
More and more brands are offering refillable cosmetics: the first time you buy your “normal” jar of cream, you just refill it exactly like for detergents. This reduces the amounts of plastic, packaging, the carbon footprint and is economical. Packaging also concerns so-called “refillable” perfumes, the bottles of which are filled in perfume fountains: the Thierry Mugler brand, a pioneer in the field, saves 380 tonnes of waste and 2.3 million bottles and cases each year.
Buy in bulk
After pasta and rice, it is cosmetics that we are starting to buy by weight in self-service. For the moment, this mainly concerns cleansing products (shower gels, shampoos, and soaps), but more and more organic and bulk stores are already offering treatments such as face creams and body milk ( Day by Day, Cozie, April…). And given the enthusiasm of the young generation for this mode of consumption, the major brands are increasing the number of tests in shops and certain “pilot” pharmacies to develop the offer more widely in the years to come.
