Well just to follow up, I knew that my wife had forgotten that it was Thanksgiving and I wanted to surprise her by taking her somewhere. Imagine, then, my own surprise when an American guy that we met in a bar last night called her today to ask her over to a dinner with some friends. When she said “can I bring a date?” he responded “um – I’m your date!”, so she said “What about my husband?”. Oops! Sounds of rapid backtracking on the other end of he phone. Moreover, he’d reminded her that of what day it was.

Suffice to say that we’re having an intimate Thanksgiving for two this evening chez nous. The turkey’s in our neighbour’s oven (ours is broken) and my vegetables are under the grill.

NEXT year for sure I plan to surprise her.

We recommend Christopher’s American Bar & Grill (18, Wellington Street, Covent Garden). Don’t be scared off by the name. We hear, from our current friends in London, that it’s a nice joint.
