Personally if I am travelling for more than a week in a country i find it easier to just buy a local sim card to use whilst in the country, most places they are inexpensive and it saves on high costs.

I belive you are right about meal eating up a big piece of you travel budget. Last year in Paris will ate at only small out of the was, not tourist catering cafes and we saved a bundle. This year whae in Spain we will do the same.

Eating an a McDonalds, What is the point? It is not good, it is not cheap nor does it reflect anything about the country that your in.

I agree about the one meal a day, but I usually choose breakfast – and I know it sounds bad – save my extra money at the end of the day for beer! Also, a lot of hostels and hotels will do 3 nights for 2 type of deals since the economy is bad right now. If you ask ahead, they will give you low season rates too.
