Our ideas of ‘nations’ is a 19th-century concept, and 19th-century nationalism helped bring nations into existence. The Tokay region has adamently not been Hungarian since 896. For a long spell it was Ottoman. Hungary has asserted claims, and – when it comes to the Slovakian part of the Tokay region – that claim was radically refuted by the post WWI treaty which rightly deprived Hungary of some territories. In a modern Europe, this matters not one iota, for boundaries have faded. Conservative forces within Hungary who try, even today, to dig up pre-Trianon claims to vast areas of central Europe do their country no favors.
