It is surely quite laughable to assert that Hungary existed in 896. Our ideas of ‘nations’ is a 19th-century concept, and 19th-century nationalism helped bring nations into existence. The Tokay region has adamently not been Hungarian since 896. For a long spell it was Ottoman. Hungary has asserted claims, and – when it comes to the Slovakian part of the Tokay region – that claim was radically refuted by the post WWI treaty which rightly deprived Hungary of some territories. In a modern Europe, this matters not one iota, for boundaries have faded. Conservative forces within Hungary who try, even today, to dig up pre-Trianon claims to vast areas of central Europe do their country no favors.

It would be important to mention why the Tokaji region “transgresses borders.” All of Tokaji was part of Hungary since 896 until WWI when Hungary lost 2/3 of her territory, 1/3 of her ethnic-Hungarian population and vast industrial and natural resources, including part the territory that is home to the Hungarian gem we know as the “Wine of Kings, King of Wines.”
