You do NOT need an Oyster card anymore. Just use a tap credit card – the same one when you tap on and out – all day. You’ll get the same charge as Oyster card users, and there is a maximum daily charge, somewhere around $10 depending on the exchange rate. And if you still have an Oyster card, you can get the deposit refunded at a tube station in cash at once off the machines.

Just tap in on the contactless symbol as you pass through the turnstile and enter the Underground system, then tap out as you leave. The fare is automatically taken.

This worked very well for me in my last visits to London in August and September, 2023, using my US-based credit cards. No need to get an Oyster Card anymore!
