I just purchased one-way Madrid to Paris for late next month for €74. Cheapest plane on same day was more than double the price. Elipsos seems pretty good value to me.

But as of 2012 this train has become prohibiltively expensive for what it offers. I was quoted around €230 one-way to Paris from Madrid, which quite frankly, given the nature of the competiition, just doesn’t make sense. I like this train and have used it a few times in the past but I’m afraid its days are well and truly numbered. Enjoy it while you can.

Factor in the costs of a hotel in Madrid, plus dinner there, early morning train out to airport and budget flight to Paris. Compared with that the Elipsos night train is not a crazy option. I can see why Brits travelling from Spain to London use it a lot.
