For Cheapos, there’s one more obvious reason to keep the amount of luggage to a minimum: checked-baggage charges. They can add up fast!

More than a decade ago, many transatlantic carriers allowed you to check two bags for free on international flights. Those were the days… After years of financial turbulence in the airline industry, most airlines implemented new complicated baggage policies, which we’ve constantly monitored in the chart below since 2011.

As you can see, many airlines still permit one free checked-in bag in economy. However, that is often not the case if you’ve booked in a “basic economy” class on certain airlines.

The chart below has been updated to reflect baggage policies and charges as of April 2024.

US to Europe Flights: Baggage fees

Here’s a quick overview of baggage policies for the major airlines flying between the United States and Europe. Prices have gone up quite a bit since we last updated this list, and they keep increasing by the day, even with oil prices now dropping.

Some airlines have also made it come complicated to calculate baggage charges, so you might have to dig deep into their websites for the information. But we discovered that in some cases fees have doubled or more in just a couple of years!

Please note that the following charges are one-way.

Note that the prices below are for standard tickets purchased on the airline. Many of these airlines offer a checked bag for free for qualifying members of their frequent flyer programs, for tickets purchased with an airline-connected credit card, or those booking in a class higher than economy. See notes below, and check with your airline or credit card for details.

Winners and losers

We’ve highlighted what we think are the airlines with the best “Cheapo-friendly” baggage policies. This is assuming that most US-based travelers to Europe will be checking in at least one suitcase. Policies that we feel are a good deal are highlighted in green, while those that aren’t budget-friendly are in red.

Most big-name and legacy carriers used to permit one free checked bag for US to Europe passengers with any Economy fare. However, those days are long gone. Although most fare types will give you one bag for free, the cheapest option on almost all airlines (usually called Light or Basic Economy, etc) now charge for checked baggage. Our advice: Read the fine print and check the baggage policy twice. Things can change at a moments notice.

Aer Lingus

The deal

Right now, Aer Lingus is offering fares under $500 direct to Ireland from the East Coast of the US. The $499 round-trip fare is good from New York JFK and Newark International Airport to Dublin and from Boston to Shannon.

If you live in Washington, DC, the price jumps a little bit to $579, and even more from the West Coast.

Travel Period: You can travel anytime between November 1, 2016 and March 31, 2017. Aer Lingus has an easy-to-use fare finder system where you can quickly scroll through the calendar to compare prices on different days of the week.

Booking Period: You have until September 21, 2016, at 7 pm to book your flight. However, as with any great flight deal, reserve your tickets as soon as possible to have the best chance at securing the dates you want to travel.

Is it a good value?

Anytime we can find a direct, round-trip flight to anywhere in Europe for $500 or less, our cheapo alarm bells go off. For budget travelers like us, flying to Europe is always the most expensive cost of our trip. With many flights to Europe tipping toward the $800-900 price range on a regular basis, we’re always on the hunt for deals like this.

Plus, Aer Lingus also lets you take one checked bag on your journey, so you don’t have to worry about hidden baggage costs at the gate. That $499 also includes all taxes and fees.

On the downside, the travel window is limited, and you can’t use this deal to go in the high season. But when the temperatures drop across Ireland in January and February at least you won’t have to worry about the summer crowds. And if you’re used to winter in New York, the “off season” in Ireland might just feel downright tropical compared to the frozen thermometer back home.

Flying the flag with Aer Lingus

Aer Lingus is by far the oldest of the airlines that fly the Irish flag. Dating back to 1936, it has struggled to shake off its image as an old-style legacy flag carrier. And struggled even more to shake off predatory take-over bids from upstart Ryanair. Thrice has Ryanair sought to gobble up Aer Lingus, and thrice has Aer Lingus repelled the advances of the suitor.

Aer Lingus is more than merely an airline of the Republic. It’s a big player in Northern Ireland too. In recent weeks, for example, the company has opened new routes from Belfast City Airport to Mallorca, Málaga and Faro. And you’ll find Aer Lingus popping up most unexpectedly in other markets too. Virgin Atlantic’s new UK domestic flights, branded “Little Red,” are more green than red: The routes from London Heathrow to Aberdeen, Manchester and Edinburgh are in fact operated by Aer Lingus under a wet-lease arrangement with Virgin Atlantic.

The tang of the isles with Aer Arann

Book a flight with Aer Lingus Regional and the chances are that your flight will not be operated by Aer Lingus at all, but by another Irish airline: Aer Arann. For more than a quarter of a century after its founding in 1970, Aer Arann’s corporate horizons were limited to the Aran Islands. They provided short-hop services from the mainland to the islands in Galway Bay. But in 1998, Aer Arann spread its wings to establish a dominance in the regional market, using its smaller aircraft to pioneer thinner secondary routes that were of no interest to Aer Lingus.

It has not always been clear skies for Aer Arann though. The carried has relied on government subsidies to maintain routes to remote rural airstrips. And when those subsidies were axed, the carrier had perforce to drop its services. Nowadays, almost all the carrier’s operations are under the wing of Aer Lingus, although you can still catch the flavor of the early days of Aer Arann on the carrier’s flights from Connemara Airport to the Aran Islands.

Ireland with a dash of France: CityJet

In our book, the most interesting of the trinity of Irish airlines is CityJet. The company took to the skies of Europe in 1994, with a route from Dublin to London City. Oddly, the carrier’s greatest visibility has never been in the Irish market at all, but at London City Airport where CityJet competes with British Airways to be the dominant carrier.

This summer CityJet is serving a score of destinations from London City. The company has greatly enhanced its services from the airport to Germany, with new routes to Paderborn and Dresden both starting in recent weeks. Despite having its headquarters just outside Dublin, CityJet relies fair and square on the London City market for the bulk of its revenue. The company’s principal shareholder is Air France, so no surprise perhaps that this Irish airline has a French CEO: Christine Ourmières.

The Air France link has been both an asset and a liability for CityJet. Just now, there is talk of the French carrier wanting to sell its Irish fledgling. But CityJet remains a carrier to watch. Those who feel that Ryanair has done nothing to promote the status of Ireland might like to try CityJet style and service. When it comes to aviation, Ireland comes in many flavors.
