Many sites in Rome are free the first Sunday of the month. If you’re willing to pay a two-euro ticket handling fee online, you can reserve tickets and skip the extremely long general admission line.

We really enjoyed the free walking tour offered by New Rome Free Tour – http://www.newromefreetour.com/ It starts at the Spanish Steps and ends at the Trevi Fountain. The guides work for tips only, so you can give him or her what you think your time was worth at the end of the tour.

The Capuchin Crypt is no longer free, as the order has opened a museum and you have to pay to go through it before you get to the crypt.
