(Please read up on severe health consequences. I am radiation sick from this since a long time. It’s torture.)
They should however have wired LAN/ethernet plugs in every room.

I do hope it is a growing trend as there is growing evidence of negative health effects from wireless technology.

It’s not easy to find such hotels because they don’t know yet that it’s a plus so they don’t advertise it. When I stay in large hotels I ask the reception for the one room farthest away from the wi-fi, I’ll typically say “Give me the room which gets the most complaints of poor wi-fi reception” so I can sleep. I can get online and surf the net if I nee to look up something and I don’t need wi-fi for that.

So we still have time to kill, and most of the places we stay don’t have TV (or if they do, no English channels!) It’s an opportune time for internetting, whether that’s to plan the following day’s activities or to catch up on emails. Why waste daylight hours sitting in a cafe just to use their internet when you could be at a museum, in a park, up the Eiffel Tower etc…

For a touring trip of Europe, I wouldn’t stay at a hotel without WiFi. And I would be unlikely to stay at one which charges for it – if the hotel was very cheap or in a fantastic location I might. But as you point out, it tends to be the more expensive, upscale hotels which charge for their wifi (clearly a money-grabbing practice) so I don’t often come across those. I rely on internet access to research and navigate, and it is much cheaper to do that on hotel wifi than to buy a sim card and pay for data (or get a travel package from your home network).

If, however, it was for a weekend away in the countryside or a few days chilling at the beach, it would not be as much of a problem to stay somewhere without it.

So, yes. What’s the name of the hotel again?
I think there’s a gap that’s soon going to be filled and more hotels will advertise themselves as free of wifi in the future. Here’s a good resource that I found, in case any electrosensitive is reading this: http://hotels-ohne-wlan.com

I didn’t care one bit that it didn’t have wifi. As soon as I got into the city I bought a SIM card for my phone anyway, and you can always get data! I will definitely stay at Hotel Henry during my next visit to Paris!!!

It doesn’t even matter if the cost of the service was offset by a cheaper per-room price. I just don’t buy the notion of paying for wifi in a hotel where it is generally available.

Shiver me timbers, but wouldn’t it be a lot more interesting to do your interneting from a cafe with wifi? ESPECIALLY in Paris with amazing people watching. Been doing this at home and abroad for the last few years, it’s great. Usually get better coffee this way too.

For my last two European trips, I stayed in apartments and WiFi was a must. We ate breakfast at home and planned our day. We usually came back before dinner to cleanup, have a snack and glass of wine, and plan our evening. I used the Internet to look up schedules, read reviews, look at the map etc. I also kept up with email so I wasn’t buried when I got back.

If I was looking for a European hotel room, there would need to be something superlative to make up for lack of WiFi.

BTW, I did get a European data plan for my phone, but don’t have tethering to my laptop or tablet and I had to be careful to conserve the limited MB of download.
