Having lived in London for the past six years and as a native NYer, I rolled my eyes at the thought that Londoners are polite. In fact, I find this city to be filled with wankers, much more so than my hometown. I can count the number of times Londoners have apologised to me whereas I apologise profusely ALL the time.

Also the Tower of London is awesome and SHOULD be seen. So for other readers, ignore that piece of “advice.”

I was in London last fall. Agree that except for the Crown Jewels, the Tower of London is vastly overrated.

As to Tube riders not speaking to each other, I’ve heard that loud or excessive talking on the train is frowned upon.

Great post. I love London and you make great points about some of the myths. On a recent visit with my sister, we traveled mostly bus instead of the Tube. It was convenient, less crowded, and we got to look at sights along the way. And we had a very economical trip with a hotel booked on points and visits to some of the many first-class free museums and galleries.
