Yes, it’s a hassle. But it’s one more step to keep your personal information safe, and another hurdle for thieves. After several wrong tries, your phone will lock and/or automatically erase. It may take you a little while to notice your phone is gone, and another bit of time to get to the police, etc.

Also, consider buying a cheap smartphone for your travels instead of your fancy new $800 iPhone. It might be less of a target, and if you lose it, it is less of a financial loss. I lost my iPhone on a train, because I absentmindedly put it in my jacket pocket where it most likely just slid out as I was leaving–it had fallen out once before. Fortunately it was locked, but never showed up again on Find my iPhone. It was an older iPhone, and gave me an excuse to buy a new one. My BF had his, so we could use it for maps and stuff. But then later, I also got a $100 Android phone for traveling. I just swap out the SIM card when I need to use it in the US.

I hold my purse in my hand as opposed to on my shoulder; it would be pretty obvious if someone leaned down right in front of me to take something out of it (and difficult in a crowded train). I haven’t had a problem yet (fingers crossed). And keep your guard up since having a backpack in Paris will identify you as a tourist and a target. Good luck!

Thank you. I will be backpacking the Camino in Spain and will transit through Paris for the first time. Any suggestions on how to pack or safe guard the backpack? It seems all of the zippered and velcro’d pockets would be especially vulnerable in crowded spaces like the metro.
I will be traveling solo and carrying a travel digital camera, iPhone5, and iPad Mini with all other belongings in a backpack.

The last year that statistics were released in France was 2010, with 630,000 thefts according to the l’Observatoire national de la délinquance et des réponses pénales (ONDRP).

I’m curious where the half a million iPhones stolen statistic comes from — it seems really high.
