I know this disturbs non french people, so let me tell you what it’s really like, most of the time, “service compris” doesn’t mean the waiting staff is well paid, or getting extra money, it means that the boss will use the “service money” to pay his staff with it (sometime barely over the minimum wage)… I’m French, and even if it is service compris/inclus (it is everywhere in the by law in the catering industry, wether it is written on your receipt or not….) I still leave a tip, up to 10% when I’m really happy… Not everyone does it, but not everyone is civilised in this country, as you must well know by now…!
