However this means that many of them are narrow (2 lanes sometimes without a continuous hard shoulder). Acceleration and deceleration lanes can be short and bends can be sharp. You will not be able to go as fast safely as you could in France for example.

If you do, you will be run over by faster moving vehicles. Also, before moving to the left lane to pass, check your rear view mirror because another car in the passing lane can seemingly come out of nowhere.
A good company to rent from is Auto Europe and rentals can be made prior to your leaving the States. You can cancel pretty much anytime before it is time to pick up the car. In my 20 years of renting cars in Europe, I have found them to have the best prices. Check with your credit card company to see if they offer zero deductible collision insurance. Most Visa and Master cards I have used do. Then you can decline the CDW in Italy and save a bundle.
