The people working in this industry receive a living wage but barely over the poverty line. It is recommended to give 5% in France and 10% in Germany. in France it is called “Pourbois” and in germany “Trinkgeld”. this translates directly to for drink and drink money. This is because of the acknowledgment that servers earn sub par wages for a very difficult job. There are no 8 hour days in germany. Some days get up to 14 hours.

So please tip. All locals do this and it and you should too as a tourist. I rely on my tips. We all do.
