Well, Trenitalia can be pretty un-friendly in general. As far as I’m concerned they still owe me 40 Euro. Maybe I should stop holding my breath; it’s been two years and I’m starting to feel lightheaded… But four times out of five, they’re still good at getting you from point A to point B for a reasonable amount of money. And yes, I know, Trenitalia’s website can be not terribly user-friendly, especially when you click over to “English.”

I debated buying point-to-point train tickets in Italy…Trenitalia or RailEurope…the exact same timetables and trains. Trenitalia did not seem as friendly with my computer. AAA suggested RailEurope and 1st class which I bought for a huge amount. Days later, read about Selectitaly website, which is great and very cheap in comparison.

And yes, cutting back a bit on the major expenses, like hotels and overpriced restaurants, is a big help.

Great advice!

Check your employee benefits package before buying travel medical coverage. Most group insurance has a travel insurance component. If this isn’t enough coverage, supplemental top-up insurance can be bought at very affordable prices.

I must admit, Tom, this post actually inspires me to think my husband and I can, in fact, afford that trip to Italy we’ve been talking about. You’re right about hotels. I mean, how much are you in them anyway? Not too terribly often if you’re out and about exploring free stuff. For now, I’m off to LA, but. . . I see Europe in my future!
