It hasn’t happened for a number of reasons.

First, and most obviously, cost: Canal-side hotels almost always charge more for the views. Venice has been welcoming tourists for hundreds of years, and those in the hotel business caught on long ago that they could charge more for rooms overlooking the city’s famous waterways, even the tiny, inconsequential canals.

Secondly, when I visit Venice for work, I’m almost always alone, and hotel owners almost always reserve their romantic canal-side rooms for doubles. Single rooms in Venice, in fact, are quite often afterthoughts (if they were thought of, at all).

While I can’t do much about the plight of the single traveler in Venice, I can offer some advice for budget travelers looking to book a hotel with a view. Fortunately, there are a few budget hotels left in the city with canal views. These tend to be romantic hold-outs who have chosen not to renovate themselves into four-star boutique properties with sky-high rates. (For that reason alone, we should support them!)

Here are five of my favorite affordable hotels in Venice that offer rooms with canal views. Note: As many of these offer only a handful of rooms with the views, be sure to be clear when reserving that you’re interested in a room with a view.

Albergo Doni

The Doni is a Cheapo classic, a small, family-run place located a couple of tiny bridges away from St. Mark’s Square. It’s an old-fashioned and modest hotel, run by the grandchildren of the original owner. Four rooms at this creaky and unpretentious hotel have canal views. Read more.

Another sweet, family-run hotel nestled along a quiet canal near St. Mark’s Square, the one-star Silva has low rates and simple rooms with AC. This one-star hotel is the most expensive on the list for a good reason: Its rooms don’t just look out to any old tiny canal, they open to the Grand Canal. Located quite literally at the base of the Accademia Bridge in Dorsoduro, the Galleria is named for its neighbor, the Galleria dell’Accademia, Venice’s most important art museum. One of the cheapest accommodations you’ll find in the city, the Hostel Domus Civica is a women’s college residence during the school year and becomes a hostel from June 1 to September 30. Located close to the Stazione di Venezia Santa Lucia train station as well as the restaurant and wine bar-littered square of Campo Santo Margherita, this hostel is popular with un-fussy backpackers.

Rooms vary in size and guests can choose between private quarters or dorm-style. Although simple, rooms are extremely clean with warm wood furnishings. For safety reasons, nobody is allowed to enter the building between 12:30 am and 7 am, although if you have a special request they will work to accommodate it. When you’re feeling social, head to the TV lounge to meet other travelers.

The San Samuele is a spunky little place with style — and some super cheap rooms.

The vibe of the hotel is eclectic, with a mix of period furnishings, stone courtyard entry, modern art and rooms with marble floors and bright pink walls.

Budget-travelers will love the property’s free Wi-Fi as well as its central location, near St. Mark’s Square, Rialto Bridge, the Accademia and the Palazzo Grassi. For something unique to do in the city, the hotel offers rides with Venice’s first female gondolier, Alexandra Hai. Additionally, the building itself gives guests a look into Venice’s history, as it dates back to the beginning of the 14th century.

Oh, what a crush we’ve got on this sweet one-star hotel. Rooms are simple (and some are comically small), but you’ll be hard-pressed to find cheaper accommodations on the Grand Canal. The historic charmer (poet Robert Browning enjoyed the views from these windows) is situated right next to the Accademia Bridge and offers views galore.

3. Albergo San Samuele

The super-Cheapo San Samuele strikes that rare balance: It’s oh-so-central (within easy walking distance from the Opera House, Rialto Bridge and more), but its quiet location near Campo San Stefano manages to feel off the beaten path.

4. Albergo Doni

The 16th-century building that houses this quiet one-star hotel sits on a canal, just two corners away from St. Mark’s Square. Rooms are basic (no air conditioning here) but cozy, and they look out over the canal or a back garden.

5. Locanda Fiorita

We’re not sure what we like best about this friendly one-star hotel: its wisteria-covered entrance or its location on the quiet square, Campiello Novo o dei Morti, near Campo San Stefano. Ask for a room on the Campiello (you’ll be glad you did).

Venice can be an tricky place to find reasonable accommodations. You dream of a room facing a canal, or at least something with a nice view. And, that will cost you.

Thankfully, there are several hotels in our hotel guide to Venice where rooms with a view can be had at reasonable rates. Take, for instance, the lovely Locanda Casa Querini, where half of the 11 rooms look out onto the surprisingly tranquil Santo Giovanni Novo square.

Benefiting from its prime location minutes from San Marco square, Querini’s rooms sparkle with bright, blue tones. After our visit here, we were screaming, “Love the bedspreads, the curtains, the carpeting! Love all of it!”
