Despite ‘data protection’ policies you can be surprised how much effort is put in to get custom by some operators. For example if you’ve visited a casino a few times back home, don’t wonder if a person ‘accidentally’ surfaces near you and starts a conversation and suggest good casinos in Greece while you have time on your hand waiting for some type of transport!
Solo travel can get lonely so yes one needs to get out of one’s comfort zone, and try striking up conversations at the delicatessen. with the receptionist…and also search out outfits with whom one is comfortable, such as a gaming intenet cafe (in Corinth) or a band club doing concerts in preparation for the Christmas festivities (in Corinth)!
Another advantage of booking into small hotels is that you are not just a number. I stayed a few days at the Metropol in Corinth, and the receptionist (a recent widow) was a mine of information and also got a young chap to pitch in with additional information I required.

Hello. I am looking for practical advice. I am a recent widow and am 61. I travelled with my husband in Europe but have never travelled solo. Most articles about solo travel are directed for the younger crowd. Can you share some of your experiences and wisdom? I am from Canada.

I am in my 60’s and travel solo in Europe, aside from visiting relatives there as well. I just did a lot of research and made mental notes about what to do and not to do (read a lot on this website and others). It helped tremendously.

I traveled by myself over land from Chile back to the US. The biggest thing I had to learn to do – because I had never had this problem in the US – was to tell men to leave me alone. This might be a skill many American women learn at home, but I was not used to being hit on. (Seriously – I am about the most ordinary-looking woman you can imagine – I do not turn heads ever.)

I guess men in Latin America think women traveling alone are looking for company? I wasn’t!

PS I am smiling at all of your tips for meeting people. That, for me, is one of the joys of traveling alone – I do not have to talk to anyone if I don’t want to!

Have travelled to Paris, Copenhagen, Budapest etc solo….best advice is to go on at least one your or hop on/off to get the lay of the land and chat up a few ppl. Budapest esp was great for making new “friends.” Amsterdam was great solo as it was very walkable. Paris was the loneliest solo because I kept thinking…”I would love to talk to someone about all that I am seeing.” But if you have a chance to go- JUST GO!
