We’ve stayed in a few hostels away from Lisbon and Porto. They are very cheap and many have a few rooms for couples. People were usually friendly and the places were clean. We only used them off season and I suspect they are more crowded during summer.

on declining bread and olives are good ones if you’re not interested in eating them. We usually waved the olives away but kept the bread. Do watch the bill for a service charge. Then there is no need to tip more than some loose change.
Wine is good and can be very affordable in Portugal. Use grocery stores to pick up snacks and sandwiches. Do eat your main meal in early afternoon for the meal of the day (usually comes with some limited choice).
It seems that every small town has a castle and they are often free. Some small town museums are also free. Walking through the old parts of towns is always free.
Enjoy Portugal. We’ve been three times and are finally making it to the Algarve in the south this month. Can’t wait
