Hotel 26

The small Hotel 26 has a serene location off Grünbergerstrasse, minutes by foot from Communist-era Karl Marx Allee, the hip, bar-lined Boxhaganer Kiez, and a streetcar and U-Bahn stop. Personal service and a devotion to all things organic—from the soap in the bathrooms to the eggs in the breakfast buffet—add distinction to this straightforward three-star hotel.

The Hotel 26 offers 20 singles, doubles and twins, each IKEA-clad (from the bedside lamps to the glasses in the bathroom), except for the excellent mattresses and bed frames. The carpeted rooms show some evidence of wear-and-tear, including slightly scuffed walls and worn furniture, but they are nonetheless clean, well-lit and blissfully quiet.

Expect a massive closet, built-in desk, chair or stool and a lamp or two. All rooms are also equipped with the usual amenities, including a TV, phone and free wired Internet. Guests with allergies can request special linens.

If you’re traveling with a group or a family, book the hotel’s massive in-house apartment, which sleeps up to six people. In addition to two bedrooms and two bathrooms, it’s got a living room with a sofa bed and a full kitchen, TV, phone and snazzy terrace.

The private bathrooms are tidy, with white tiles, natural, plant-based toiletries and a hairdryer.

The hotel’s high-ceilinged lobby doubles as Café 26, where you can unwind with an afternoon coffee, evening drink or small snack overlooking a small garden. The Hotel 26 also has an event room, and the pretty garden is a great place to relax on a lounge chair when the weather allows.

A great organic breakfast is included in the room rate, and Café 26 offers a varied lunch and dinner menu. The Hotel 26 also has a special water-filtration system, so that guests can fill up water bottles straight from the tap. In addition to free wireless Internet in the rooms, Wi-Fi is free in the public spaces. Note that the hotel does not have an elevator.
